D-U-N-S®
The D-U-N-S® Number (Data Universal Numbering System) is a 9-digit numeric code that was developed and implemented by Dun & Bradstreet in 1962. This enables a uniform identification of companies worldwide. The D-U-N-S® Number is the key to the data of over 109 million companies stored in the D&B database. These identification characteristics are used to clearly identify supplier overlap and corporate family structures. The D-U-N-S® Number enables companies to be correlated with their parent companies, sister companies and branch offices. In addition, the code enables the quick identification of a particular location and economic sector. D-U-N-S® Numbers are centrally allotted and administrated by D&B. Every number is assigned to one company only. This way, a company can be identified, even when, for example, the company's name or legal form changes. D-U-N-S® Numbers are only assigned to commercial or entrepreneurial persons and organizations, not to private individuals.
